Oh Hello! I can't believe you fell for that one. Naughty you. I can only guess you being here makes you one of three things:
A. You are intrigued by digital video.
B. You are intrigued by sex.
C. Like us, you are intrigued by both (usually not at the same time).
This blog post is about to get dirty. Let's hit it!
Tip no. 1 - Spice Up That Old Familiar Feeling:
Display your goods in a new and exciting light! Don’t change your moves. Change your attitude! Creative is the Kama Sutra of video. IKEA, being a very "physical" enterprise, brings us a fresh new take on their old school mail-delivered printed catalog, making even the most hardcore "digital" customers giggle.
Tip no. 2 - Size Does NOT Matter:
As long as you know what to do with it, you will keep your clients coming back for more! Here are two great examples. This 30sec explainer video made for Groupon gives the viewer exactly the right amount of info he needs. Not less, not more. I think it's one of the best examples of how to deliver an accurate message using a very short, focused video. The other is a 43min documentary film I just happened to stumble upon, reviewing the story of content marketing. It is useful, full of value and well presented. Once you see who's behind this production (a video hosting platform and content institutions), you'll get the hang of it completely.
Tip no. 3 - Let Others Glorify You:
Talking about yourself as the King Of The Hill may interest some people. But when others share their experiences with you, that's a whole different story altogether. This will probably lead to a growing interest in your performance. For example, the ingenious Sandwich Video team, which also produced this Video for Slack - Are some very happy users.
Tip no. 4 - Beat Around The Bush:
Everything is storytelling. Build suspense, build climax, tell a story. Don't go charging the hill before defusing all the explosive charges around it. When we did this video for UXVision, the end-game was to get target viewers interested in the UX field and in UX studies by dropping their details on the certification program's website. We wanted to engage the viewers by giving them a window into the life of a UX designer, the impact of UX, and the identity of the profession, knowing they will identify themselves somewhere in that window. Not one word about the program itself or UX salaries. That can come later.
Tip no. 5 - Know Their Soft Spots:
Speaking of UX (We love UX), the most fundamental pillar of User Experience is "Know the person you are about to face". Know his or her desires and work them accordingly to create the right atmosphere when you finally come together. You want to sell shaving knives for men? Be cool, be funny, talk about sports, film in a warehouse, use one or two F-words, use a machete, use a bear, be direct about pricing, deliver a simple message and PARTY. You're there.
Tip no. 6 - Take Control, Give Away Control:
Some people like to lead. Others, to be led. The most important thing is to know when and how to give or take control. When we are given the choice, the power is in our hands and power is sexy even if we choose to give it to someone else. The guys at Eko, FKA Interlude, are very sexy. Tip no. 7 - Call To Action:
When you are already tangled up in it, keeping up the pace is super important. If you did everything right and you know how to feel the crowd, you should know by now when is exactly the right time to end it and make everyone feel satisfied. Don't leave it hanging! When you feel the time is right, say what you want! Say it loud! Say it clear! Make them push that special button… Call to Action!
Make 'em subscribe, make 'em fill in that form, make 'em hit accept, make 'em donate, make 'em want to. You can use a button, you can use your narrator, you can make the storyline lead them to it - It's up to you. Just make them know they did not just spent 1-5 minutes of their life for nothing. Make them feel they made the right choice spending time with you, for both your sakes. Here's how to do it right:
